PHYLLIS FEEMSTER

Artist Biography

Phyllis, a native Californian, was born in Gilroy when it was a town of 2500. Her grandfather on her father’s side was also born there. The family home built by her great grandfather still stands in good repair across from the Gilroy city museum.

She studied art under William Cunningham in 1966 and later with Stella Leis, Jane Hofstetter, and Marie McDonnell Roberts. She has participated in the Jade Fon workshops in Asilomar and the Jane Burnham workshop in Yosemite. Each included direction by nationally known artists/instructors.

Phyllis is a member of the Saratoga Contemporary Artists and her work is shown at art shows in the Bay Area. Her feeling and approach to art is this: “Painting is a continual process of creating by seeing, feeling, and learning. I enjoy the challenge of painting different subjects and the use of many methods of putting paint on paper. When tackling an assignment, I treat it like a puzzle to solve: designing the total picture as to value, color, and content. I paint for the pleasure of it and am happy that my work entertains and gives others enjoyment, too.”

She has conducted art critiques at her home for over 10 years to encourage and support art development and growth in the area.

She lives in Saratoga where she continues actively pursuing her art. She and her husband, John, have an extended interest in art and music. They have sung with the Silicon Valley Chorale, known for performances of great breadth and earlier with the San Jose Symphony for a period of over 16 years. Phyllis has a broad experience background besides her love of art.

After attending Stanford, she worked for Pan American Airways when it was on Treasure Island in San Francisco, then at Salinas Valley Savings (later known as Washington Mutual) and eventually became a realtor in Saratoga. She has remodeled a 100 year old home as well as designed and built custom homes with her husband until her retirement in 1985.
